Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a photocell and a motion sensor?
A photocell detects ambient light levels and provides simple dusk-to-dawn on/off switching — the fixture turns on when it gets dark and off at dawn. A motion sensor (Jarvis PhotoMotion™) detects movement via passive infrared (PIR) and controls fixture dimming — the fixture operates at a low standby brightness and ramps to full output when motion is detected. Photocells are for fixtures that should run all night. Motion sensors are for areas where fixtures should dim when unoccupied to save additional energy beyond the dusk-to-dawn schedule.
Which photocell voltage do I need?
Match the photocell voltage rating to your circuit voltage. Jarvis offers 120V (button style), 120-277V (stem or button — covers most commercial circuits), 347V (Canadian commercial standard), and 480V (industrial). The 120-277V heavy duty stem photocell is the most common choice for U.S. commercial applications because it covers both 120V and 277V circuits with a single SKU. All Jarvis photocells use a standard 1/2-inch threaded connection.
What is PhotoMotion™ and how does it work?
PhotoMotion™ is Jarvis Lighting's integrated PIR motion sensor system for commercial LED fixtures. The sensor mounts into a 1/2-inch NPT knockout on the fixture housing and provides multi-level control: full brightness when motion is detected, adjustable standby dimming (down to 10%) when no motion is present, and optional daylight harvesting that reduces output when ambient light is sufficient. All settings are field-programmable using the Jarvis A315 handheld remote — sensitivity, hold time, standby brightness, and daylight threshold.
What is the detection range of Jarvis PhotoMotion sensors?
The outdoor PhotoMotion™ A312P/A313P covers a maximum 60-foot diameter detection zone from a 40-foot mounting height with 360° coverage. Detection range decreases at lower mounting heights. The indoor A314P covers 48-foot diameter from 8–20 feet (low bay lens) or 60-foot diameter from 8–50 feet (high bay lens). Actual coverage depends on mounting height, sensor orientation, and environmental conditions. The A315 programming remote allows field adjustment of detection sensitivity.
What is a Z10 sensor and when do I need one?
Z10 is Jarvis Lighting's plug-and-play sensor interface used on JarvisLink™ networked lighting control-ready fixtures. Z10 sensors (like the S-Z10-SPM) snap into a dedicated port on Z10-ready fixtures — no hardwiring to the fixture's 0-10V leads. Z10 is required when the project specifies JarvisLink networked controls with Bluetooth commissioning, zone grouping, or scheduling. For standalone motion sensing without networking, the standard PhotoMotion A312P/A313P is sufficient.
Do I need the A315 programming remote?
The A315 remote is required for full customization of PhotoMotion™ sensor settings — detection range sensitivity, hold time, hold brightness, daylight sensor threshold, standby brightness, and standby time. Without the remote, sensors operate on factory-default settings which work for most applications. One A315 remote can program all PhotoMotion sensors on a project. For Z10 sensors, the A315-Z10-V1 variant is required instead of the standard A315.
Can I use Jarvis photocells and sensors with non-Jarvis fixtures?
Photocells: Yes. Jarvis stem and button photocells use standard electrical connections (1/2-inch NPSM stem or knockout mount) and work with any LED or traditional fixture within the rated wattage (up to 1000W for heavy duty stem, 600W for button style). Motion sensors: The PhotoMotion™ series requires a 1/2-inch NPT knockout and a 0-10V dimming driver in the fixture. Any fixture with 0-10V dimming and a compatible knockout is compatible. Z10 sensors are Jarvis-proprietary and work only with Z10-ready Jarvis fixtures.
How much energy do motion sensors save compared to dusk-to-dawn photocells?
A photocell provides dusk-to-dawn operation — typically 10–12 hours per night at full brightness. Adding a motion sensor with standby dimming (20–30% output) can reduce nighttime energy consumption by an additional 40–60% depending on traffic patterns. For a 100W wall pack running 4,000 hours annually, a photocell alone saves energy vs. manual switching, but adding a PhotoMotion sensor with 70% standby reduction saves approximately 280 kWh per fixture per year in low-traffic areas.
